FPA of Michigan Summer 2018 Newsletter Print

President's Message

Dear Fellow FPA members,

We are at the half-way point in 2018 and it has been and exciting year thus far! The board and all the committees have been hard at work planning and executing exciting events that have been meaningful to our membership. To date we have provided over 30 education and other focused special events on the east, west, north and south sides of our beautiful state. With that being said, we are seeing many new faces in attendance and are happy to see our members taking advantage of the hard work put forth by the committees.

As the Michigan summers tend to fly by (and are always way too short), fall will be knocking on our door in the not so distant future.  I would be remiss in my duties if I did not personally invite you to attend our Annual Fall Symposium November 7 and 8 to be held at the Sheraton in Novi Michigan. This event keeps growing, year after year, due to the first-class lineup of presentations and speakers and a convenient venue in Novi. This year’s event will be held on a Wednesday and Thursday, so why not take a couple extra days off and experience the exciting rebirth of downtown Detroit. With Novi being just a short drive away, you might want to try many of the new restaurants, walk the new Riverwalk or take a ride on the Q-Line to see the resurgence from downtown to mid-town. It’s an exciting time to Live in Michigan with good things happening in every corner of our state.

I would like to close by saying to all of you, have a Safe and Prosperous Summer and enjoy your time with family and friends! Life is too short, let us all strive to live for today! Looking forward to meeting you at one of our upcoming events as we become ONE FPA.

Kindest Regards,

George Barnhart

FPA of Michigan 2018 Advocacy Day. On March 21, 2018, 9 FPA of Michigan members attended Advocacy Day in Lansing! Along with Karen Nystrom from FPA National, we met with 7 representatives and 5 staffers. At each meeting, we conveyed the strength of the FPA, our membership reach, the pro bono work that is being done and offered our services for consultation on any pending regulations.

We started the day at SBAM where we were briefed on pending issues, including marijuana legalization. Items representatives were concerned about did include the legalization of marijuana, senior issues, college funding and student loans, financial education and retirement funding. Overall this was one of our most successful days in Lansing!

The FPA of Michigan is committed to its members and the continued success of our organization. Therefore, the FPA of Michigan developed the GIVE BACK PROGRAM and has several opportunities to award various scholarships to young planners, college students and career changers who are interested in pursuing a career in financial planning. What’s trending now in investments for financial advisers?
For the fourth consecutive year, Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are proving to be the most used/recommended investment options by financial advisers. While ETF use continues to soar, cryptocurrencies are among the least used or recommended investment options. These and other trends are uncovered in the 2018 Trends in Investing Survey report by FPA and the Journal of Financial Planning. View the report and see where your peers are investing now and where they will be investing in the coming year.
